The exoskeleton Hapo BACK: more endurance, less fatigue

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect many workers exposed to repetitive movements and strenuous postures. In industries such as manufacturing, construction, and agriculture, lifting heavy loads and repeated movements put significant strain on the back and shoulders. To address this challenge, exoskeletons are emerging as an innovative and effective solution.

Recently, a scientific study (read the study) presented at the CIB World Building Congress 2025 compared two lumbar support exoskeletons: the Hapo BACK and a competing model based on an elastic system.

Clear results: Hapo improves endurance

The results of the study are telling:

- With Hapo, participants lasted 29% longer than without the exoskeleton.

- Compared to the competing exoskeleton, Hapo allowed for 19% greater endurance.

In other words, Hapo helps to perform more movements, for a longer time, with less perceived fatigue.

Why does Hapo make the difference?

Hapo BACK uses a system of mechanical springs and a stabilizing lumbar belt. This design allows for the transfer of part of the upper body load to the thighs, thereby reducing the strain on the back muscles. Result:

- constant support during bending and straightening,

- better distribution of effort,

- reduced muscle fatigue.

A supplement to the prevention of MSDs (Musculoskeletal Disorders)

The study also highlights an important truth: exoskeletons do not replace good ergonomic practices. Training in movements and postures remains essential. However, as a complement, the Hapo BACK exoskeleton proves to be a valuable ally for extending endurance and reducing fatigue at work.

Designed and manufactured in France, the Hapo exoskeleton is now a reference for contributing to the prevention of MSDs in many sectors. Ergonomic innovation is no longer limited to factories or construction sites: it is also entering hospitals, logistics, and agriculture.

Artificial intelligence at the service of ergonomics

To conduct this study, the researchers used a mobile application based on artificial intelligence: HAPO LEA (Lifting Ergonomics Assessment). Developed by our teams, this innovative solution automatically analyzes movements and postures from simple videos, then assigns a risk score according to the RULA method, widely used in ergonomics.

Thanks to HAPO LEA, it is possible to obtain objective, reliable, and quick data on the impact of exoskeletons and the quality of work postures. This tool paves the way for a scientific and accessible evaluation of everyday ergonomics.
